Tiffin Finishes Cinderella Run with Great Midwest Championship Title

3.6.21

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - The No. 5 Tiffin Dragons capped off an incredible journey through the Great Midwest championship bracket with a 61-57 overtime victory over No. 2 Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday in the Callan Athletic Center.

The Dragons defeated No. 4 Ohio Dominican in Tuesday's quarterfinal on a buzzer beating tip-in and took down No. 1 seeded Cedarville in the last night's semifinals, leading for the entirety of that contest.

It was the ultimate accomplishment for first year head coach Miriam Justinger, as this marks the first Great Midwest women's basketball title for Tiffin since joining the conference in 2018-19 as a full member. This will also be Tiffin's first NCAA tournament appearance, as the Dragons earned the conference's AQ spot.

The Great Midwest is positioned to have as many as (3) or (4) teams advance to the Atlantic Regional, as Cedarville, Kentucky Wesleyan and Walsh are all still in the mix to earn at-large bids.

The NCAA selection show will reveal the 48-team field on Sunday at 10 p.m. ET streamed on NCAA.com

Tiffin trailed through the first 20 minutes of play as the Panthers took control early, extending the lead to double-digits in the second quarter. But the momentum shifted in the third quarter when first team all-conference guard Aarion 'Oni' Nichols took over, scoring 12 points in that quarter alone.

The two teams traded baskets down the stretch, with Nichols drilling a three to push the game into overtime. Second team all-conference guard Savanah Richards scored the first two buckets of overtime to sway the game back into the Dragon's favor. She then made a pair of clutch free throws to secure the win in the closing seconds.

Nichols finished with 22 points and Richards finished with 23 points to lead all scorers.

KWC's Cali Nolot and Jordyn Barga scored 10 a piece to lead the Panthers.
