Women’s Soccer Players of the Week (March 30)

3.30.21

INDIANAPOLIS – Walsh and Ohio Dominican had impressive efforts on the pitch as Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Players of the Week performances were recognized on Tuesday.

Walsh, co-preseason favorites with Findlay, continued its perfect run through the conference schedule and leads all teams with 12 points from four victories. Trevecca Nazarene is close behind with 10 points and a 3-1-1 record.

A three-way tie forms after with Ohio Dominican, Ohio Valley and Malone, all knotted with 7 conference points apiece.

Offensive Player of the Week
Hannah Stein
Walsh
Midfield
Freshman
Canfield, OH (Canfield HS)

Stein was golden, not once, but twice in as many games as the Cavaliers stymied Lake Erie and defeated Ohio Valley in extra time over the past week of competition.

Walsh overcame a game-tying goal from the Storm’s Carly Kandel in the first half and had a significant advantage in the shot department, 36-4. Lake Erie’s defense didn’t give in and forced a second overtime session.

Stein, playing in a reserve role, broke through in the 108th minute for the game winner, assisted on a feed from Madalyn Canter. There was less than two minutes on the clock before the tie would have been declared.

It was her only shot of the contest.

Fast forward to the weekend against the Fighting Scots, a program that was handed its first league loss by the Cavaliers. The freshman delivered once again, this time the 91st minute to cap a memorable week.

Walsh had an 11-6 edge in total shots and Stein was credited with two of them.

Defensive Player of the Week
Jadelyn McNerney
Ohio Dominican
Goalkeeper
Freshman
Springboro, OH (Springboro HS)

Ohio Dominican’s rookie keeper has been flawless with her third consecutive clean sheet recorded against co-preseason favorite Findlay.

The key shutout win gave the Panthers an important 3 points in the conference standings and carried over from holding Lake Erie and Cedarville off the scoreboard in previous spring games.

After making four saves vs. LEC and five more vs. Cedarville, McNerney came through with a career-high eight stops against Findlay’s offense.

McNerney was in net for the full 90 minutes and the pressure was on relatively early when Ohio Dominican struck in the 16th minute courtesy of Callan Myers.

McNerney held strong and made six saves in the second half alone as the Oilers sprayed 15 total shots vs. ODU’s 11. Her perfect season has her tops among keepers in the league in goals against average and save percentage (17 total saves). Her three shutouts is also a league-leading total.
