KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) announced the 2021 Division II All-District teams and coaches, recognizing the best men’s student-athletes and coaches in each respective division.
Selected and voted on by member coaches of the NABC in NCAA Division II, a total of 89 represented their respective regions. The NABC All-American Team was also announced a short time after the all-district announcement.
Hillsdale’s Patrick Cartier earned the highest billing possible with NABC All-American honors and NABC First Team All-District status in the Atlantic Region. The reigning Great Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year and first team all-conference pick helped lead the Chargers into the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Championship bracket at the Atlantic Region title game.
Cartier averaged a league best 20.5 points per game and was tops in the conference in field goal percentage at 65.1 percent. He was named conference player of the week five different times over the season and also averaged 6.2 rebounds per contest.
Hillsdale head coach John Tharp earned NABC Coach of the Year for the Atlantic Region after guiding the Chargers to a 21-3 overall record, a No. 1 overall seed in the Atlantic Region bracket with a first-round bye and a ranking as high as No. 9 in the country. Tharp was also pronounced the Great Midwest Coach of the Year by his peers for the 2020-21 season.
Joining Cartier on the NABC All-District First Team was Findlay senior point guard Tommy Schmock, the league’s career leader in assists and steals. Schmock averaged almost 14 points per game for the Oilers during an 18-win season. He was named to the all-conference first team and all-defensive team for the second year in a row by the league’s coaches.
Two more accomplished student-athletes were named to the NABC All-District Second Team, including Malone’s Marcus Ernst and Walsh’s Darryl Straughter.
Ernst was a major force in the Pioneers’ first conference tournament title and an NCAA Championship appearance as the No. 6 seed in the Atlantic Region. He was the league leader in rebounding (9.4 per game) and ended the season sixth in scoring at 16.3 points per game. Like Schmock, Ernst was locked in as a first team all-conference selection and all-defensive team honoree.
Straughter averaged 18.2 points per game for the Cavaliers, a figure that ranked second in the league only to Hillsdale’s Cartier. The senior guard made 3.3 three-point field goals per game, tops in the conference, and sank 65 triples.
Straughter was also as good as it gets at the charity stripe while sinking almost 89 percent of his tries as the line (55-of-62).
