Walsh, Tiffin Advance in Regional Tournament

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Four Great Midwest teams competed in the first round of the Atlantic Regional Tournament on Friday evening, with Walsh and Kentucky Wesleyan advancing onto the regional semifinals on Saturday. 

Walsh will face No. 1 seed Charleston at 6 p.m. ET. Charleston received a first-round bye as the automatic qualifier from the Mountain East and heads into the regional tournament at 17-2 on the season. 

In one of two Great Midwest opening round games, No. 5 Walsh defeated No. 4 Cedarville, 88-71. The Cavaliers shot 55 percent from the field and 44 percent from beyond the arc. Walsh was led by Sha Carter’s 23-point, 19-rebound , 10 assist triple-double. Lexie Scarton shot 70 percent from the field en route to 17 points. 

The Yellow Jackets were led by Ashlyn Huffman’s 29 points, with Emily Chapman adding 17 points.

No. 6 Tiffin defeated No. 3 Kentucky Wesleyan in a rematch of the Great Midwest Championship, this time winning 70-56. Tiffin shot the ball at 48 percent from the field and 50 percent from deep. 

Aarion “Oni” Nichols just missed a triple-double with 23 points, nine rebounds and eight assists to lead the Dragons. Jasmine Watts scored 11 points off the bench as she was the only other Tiffin player to reach double figures.

For KWC, Tahlia Walton was on fire shooting 7-of-8 from the floor and 2-of-2 from three for 21 points to lead the Panthers.

Tiffin will play No. 2 Glenville State in the semifinal, who enters the game at 12-3 after receiving a first-round bye. That game will take place at 8:45 p.m. ET.

This is the first team either program has won an NCAA Regional game.
