Volleyball Players of the Week (Feb. 1)

INDIANAPOLIS - The second full week of competition earned Hillsdale  Great Midwest Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week honors announced Monday afternoon.

Eight matches were played this week throughout the conference with No. 12 ranked Hillsdale going 2-0. Cedarville, Ohio Dominican and Tiffin all were 1-0 on the week. 

Ursuline and Walsh both split this week, with wins over Ohio Valley and Findlay, respectively. Walsh then took a set from Hillsdale for the first time this season, before falling to the Chargers. 

All 12 teams have now played at least one match, with Hillsdale, Tiffin, Lake Erie and Ohio Dominican remaining undefeated in the early season.

Shelton is off to a stellar start to the season as she earns Offensive Player of the Week honors in back-to-back weeks. This week, the Junior helped her team to wins over Malone (3-0) and Walsh (3-1).

In Friday night’s win over Malone, Shelton connected for 12 kills on 24 total attacks, for a hitting percentage of .458. She also contributed a team-high 4 service aces, for 16 points on the night.

The outside hitter then went on to put up a career-high 21 kills on a .364 hitting percentage in four sets against Walsh. Shelton also added 19 digs to her Saturday totals. 

Shelton currently ranks second in kills per set with 4.23 and third in hitting percentage at .370 among league competitors. 

In addition to the past two weeks, Shelton also earned conference weekly honors on October 14, 2019. 

Defensive Player of the Week
Alli Wiese
Hillsdale

Mattawan, MI (Mattawan HS)

On the defensive side, Wiese has transitioned well into her role as libero for the Chargers. Against Walsh, she finished with 33 digs in four sets. That number was just one shy of tying the four-set single match record in digs set by her sister, Taylor, in 2019. 

In Saturday’s win over Malone, Wiese finished with 11 digs, playing as a defensive specialist. 

The freshman currently ranks fourth in the Great Midwest in digs per set with 5.31. 

Wiese is also one of the top servers in the league as she contributed 2 service aces per match last week. She ties Shelton for sixth in the conference at .540 service aces per set.
