INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Championship quarterfinals played out accordingly to seeding on Saturday evening as No. 3 seed Ohio Dominican and No. 4 Walsh both advanced into the semifinals.
The six-team conference tournament bracket saw No. 6 Tiffin and No. 5 Findlay with their seasons come to an end in hard-fought matchups.
Ohio Dominican, playing Tiffin, for the third time in the fall and second time in a row since closing the regular season, was able to hang out for a 1-0 final at Panther Stadium.
Khalif Hassan scored early in regulation and the ODU defense held strong the rest of the way to protect the lead. Goalkeeper Alvaro Benito had eight saves, including a crucial PK, in the first half while diving to his right.
The Panthers will be preparing to face No. 2 seed Cedarville on Thursday at 4 p.m. ET in the next round. ODU also advanced to the semis earlier this spring in the delayed conference tournament while serving as host.
Walsh joined its women’s program in the semifinals by scoring three goals in a strong showing at home against Findlay.
The Cavaliers opened things up offensively as Harry Gardner, Eirik Bomann and Patrick O’Halloran, all scored in order to help Walsh win. The shot differential was only +1 for Walsh but some of the shots for the Oilers didn’t find the target.
Walsh moves on to take on top seed and conference regular season champion Lake Erie on Thursday at Jack Britt Stadium with a 7 p.m. ET start time.
The Great Midwest has three teams ranked in Super Region 3 all in the final four of the championship bracket by either an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.
