INDIANAPOLIS – The six playoff teams have been announced for the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Championship bracket as the regular season for the 2021 season concluded on Tuesday.
First-round quarterfinal contests will be conducted this Saturday, Nov. 6, from host school sites at the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds. With the top two seeds receiving a bye in the opening round, the final four teams will then advance on to the semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 11, while the championship game will be played on Saturday.
The final four teams will make their way to Ashland University, where the Eagles will serve as host for the semifinals and championship in their first go as a member in the Great Midwest. Ashland was crowned the conference regular season champion and is ranked No. 2 in the Midwest Region going into the semifinals.
Ashland earned a first-round bye into the semifinals along with No. 2 seed and fellow regionally ranked Cedarville. The Yellow Jackets passed Findlay in the conference standings with a tough victory over Ohio Dominican on Tuesday night.
By excelling through the latter half of the conference schedule, Ohio Dominican is as tough of a draw for anyone while winning six of seven conference games in a stretch of October. By their standard, the Panthers had a little bit of a slow start out of the gate in a front-loaded schedule, but really ramped things up to secure their postseason bid.
Seeding for the bracket went down to almost midnight on Tuesday as Trevecca Nazarene split from a tie with Ohio Dominican to earn quarterfinal hosting rights. The Trojans are the No. 4 seed after beating Kentucky Wesleyan in overtime and welcome No. 5 seed ODU for a 2 p.m. ET start time from Nashville on Saturday.
Findlay’s regular season schedule ended a little bit earlier than other teams and the Oilers had to wait out Tuesday’s results to determine their outcome in the standings. The Oilers are seeded third after securing the spring conference championship title and going into the fall as the conference preseason favorite.
Findlay will host No. 6 seed Walsh as the Cavaliers defeated close rival Malone, 3-1, for three points. Walsh was battling hard for the final playoff spot with Tiffin as the Dragons were defeated by Ursuline yesterday to conclude the regular season. Walsh and Findlay will kick things off on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET with the winner facing No. 2 Cedarville.
The winner of the Great Midwest Championship tournament will receive an automatic qualifying bid into the Midwest Region of the NCAA Championship. The national tournament field is selected through eight regions based on access ratio. The NCAA Championship Selection Show will then be streamed on Monday, Nov. 15, at 6 p.m. ET.
The Great Midwest All-Conference Team, including individual award winners and the Elite 25 Award recipient will be announced next Thursday afternoon. All awards are voted on by the league’s head coaches. Thirty-three individuals on the first, second and third teams, will be revealed in the afternoon.
