INDIANAPOLIS - For their stellar postseason play, a pair of all-conference performers were recognized for the second time in the final selection of Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Players of the Week as announced Tuesday.
Offensive Player of the Week
Teddy Baker
Lake Erie
Forward
Freshman
Bawdsey, England (Farlingaye HS)
The Great Midwest Freshman of the Year played anything but like a rookie on the big stage in the conference tournament with a monster two-game stretch in wintery weather conditions.
Baker scored three goals and had one assist in the conference semifinals and championship bout against No. 4 Walsh and No. 3 Ohio Dominican.
He came through in a big way after Great Midwest Offensive Player of the Year Ayden Von Essen (9 G, 5 A, 23 PTS) was injured during practice and was unable to play.
Baker scored two goals in a wild one over Walsh on Thursday. The forward scored in each half and had an assist close to halftime as Alex Ovalle gave the Storm a 3-1 lead.
Baker now goes into the NCAA Championship Super Region Three bracket with 22 points from eight goals and six assists. His point total ranks fifth in the conference. Baker was previously conference defensive player of the week this season as well.
Defensive Player of the Week
Ben Wiemann
Lake Erie
Defense
Junior
Freiburg, Germany (UMass)
Wiemann and the Storm celebrated the AQ with an impressive defensive showing against two teams that showcase plenty of offensive firepower at the midfield and striker positions.
The defense only gave up six shots against Walsh in a 5-2 win. LEC held strong on the back line in the title game over ODU on 16 shots faced.
This is his second conference weekly honor of the season. He was voted as the Great Midwest Defensive Player of the Year in the delayed spring season and tabbed second team all-conference this fall by the coaches.
