INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Midwest Athletic Conference is sending three programs to the Super Region Three portion of the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Championship following the reveal of Monday night’s selection show.
A total of 40 teams from four super regions across the country were selected by the national committee with the first round coming up quick on Thursday, Nov. 18 on campus host sites. From Super Region Three, teams from the Great Midwest, Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC), Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and Great American Conference/Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) were eligible for selection.
The three automatic qualifiers from Super Region Three were all placed in the final set of regional rankings and that included Lake Erie from the Great Midwest, UIndy from the GLVC and Wisconsin Parkside from the GLIAC. There is no AQ determined from the GAC/MIAA combined standings.
Start times in Super Region Three have been set at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. ET on Thursday for a pair of opening first-round contests.
Lake Erie and Cedarville are both back in the NCAA Championship field for the second straight year after four teams from the Great Midwest qualified in 2019. The Storm completed a regular season and tournament title run under Great Midwest Coach of the Year Louie Rolko and his program is red hot going into the extended postseason.
LEC will be hosting one half of the bracket and the Storm earned a first-round bye. Lake Erie awaits the winner of No. 7 Lewis (GLVC) and No. 10 Davenport (GLIAC) in a game that starts on Thursday at 3 p.m. ET.
Second-round games hosted by Lake Erie will be played at Mentor High School in order to accommodate the requirements of NCAA tournament play.
For Cedarville and Ohio Dominican, it is a case of ‘we meet again’ in a strange luck of the draw as the Yellow Jackets and Panthers will be squaring off on the pitch for the fourth time in the 2021 campaign. Most recently, ODU eliminated Cedarville by a 1-0 final in the conference tournament semifinals.
Cedarville will carry the No. 8 seed in the bracket vs. ODU’s No. 9 seed. They will play on Thursday at 1 p.m. ET for the right to advance to meet Super Region Three top seed UIndy in the second round.
Ten teams were selected from each of the four super regions. Teams from the same region will be paired for first- and/or second-round competition, which will be conducted Nov. 18-21 on campus sites. Third-round/quarterfinals will be held on campus sites and completed by Dec. 2-5. The semifinals and final will be played Dec. 9 and 11 at Switchbacks FC Stadium in Colorado Springs, Colorado hosted by Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. In the 2019 championship, Charleston (West Virginia) beat West Chester 2-0 to claim their second national championship title in three years.
