INDIANAPOLIS – The first weekend of the new season started all five programs as Great Midwest Athletic Conference Wrestling Athlete of the Week honors were announced for the first time in 2021-22 on Wednesday.

The Dragons started their season at the Southeast Open and Mason was a man on a mission in his 197-weight class bracket against primarily Division I competition.
 
The former NCAA champion and multiple All-American powered his way through for a fifth-place finish after he was dealt an unattached opponent for his opening-round matchup.
 
Mason reeled off four consecutive wins in order to place and three of those were with bonus points working his way through the bracket.
 
Mason pinned his opponent from Davidson in 6:48 before doing efficient work for a technical fall over his next matchup from NJIT. For the fifth-place contest, he finished with a pin under a minute for a 43-second stick, his second of the event.
