HAMMOND, Ind. –
In 2019, the Great Midwest Athletic Conference managed a total of nine victories combined as a league at the Midwest Region Crossover Volleyball Tournament at The Academy Club in Indianapolis.

On Friday alone, the Great Midwest exceeded that total at the Hammond Sportsplex competing against the Great Lakes Valley Conference and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Great Midwest won 10 matches as eight different teams earned at least one victory to finish day one with a 10-8 record against similarly-seeded competition. The GLVC went 10-13 on Friday while the GLIAC finished 9-8.

Fans turned out to support their respective programs in the facility as three different sessions with 29 matches went final.

Nationally ranked Hillsdale and Ashland each went 2-0 to highlight day one action. The Chargers made quick work of UIndy in a sweep before pulling off another 3-0 set win against the GLVC’s top seed, Lewis.

Ashland, the Great Midwest’s No. 3 seed as the leader of the South Division, defeated its No. 3 counterpart from the GLIAC, Wayne State, in four sets. The Eagles then toppled Southern Indiana, the GLVC’s No. 4 seed, in the nightcap.

Ashland’s two-time South Division Player of the Week, outside hitter Erin Krupar, leads all players in the tournament with 44 kills in eight sets.

As the No. 6 seed, Trevecca Nazarene pulled the first-round upset by also beating Southern Indiana in a 3-0 final. No. 4 seed Walsh opened the day against Rockhurst before carving out a win over future Great Midwest opponent Northwood, the No. 5 GLIAC seed.

With two more matches tomorrow, Tiffin and Cedarville, both were able to grind out five-set victories in the afternoon. Ursuline and Malone also defeated William Jewell and Lake Superior State, respectively.

Saturday’s tournament action will start 9:30 a.m. CT. The second session will start at 12:45 p.m. CT and the final session of the tourney will begin at 4 p.m. CT.
