7.16.20

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Multiple individuals and programs in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference were rewarded for their work in the classroom as the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) published its 2019-20 academic awards this week.

Over 1,350 student-athletes were named to the NABC Honors Court for the past season, including 16 from the Great Midwest featuring five member institutions. Cedarville, Hillsdale, Kentucky Wesleyan, Ohio Valley and Tiffin, all had at least one recipient of the award.

Ohio Valley led all conference schools with five total selections to the NABC Honors Court.

The NABC Honors Court celebrates the talents and gifts that these men possess off the court, and the hard work they exhibit in the classroom.

In order to be named to the Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria. The qualifications are as follows:

1. Academically a junior or senior and a varsity player.
2. Cumulative G.P.A. of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the academic year.
3. Students must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution.
4. Member of an NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA Division I or II institution with a full-time NABC member coach.

Each spring, the organization also recognizes programs which excelled in academics during the previous season with the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award. The NABC celebrates the overall academic success of these outstanding programs.

The Great Midwest was represented by Cedarville University coached by Pat Estepp, Hillsdale College coached by John Tharp and Ohio Valley University coached by Mike Snell.

In order to receive the Team Academic Excellence Award, a program must achieve a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better for the previous season.

Each institution must count the grade point averages of all men’s student-athletes competing during the previous season in all NCAA Divisions, all NAIA Divisions and all two-year colleges with a full-time NABC member coach.
