INDIANAPOLIS – Eight teams qualified for the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Championship set to begin Tuesday.
No. 1 seeded Hillsdale, along with No. 2 Findlay, No. 3 Walsh, and No. 4 Cedarville, will host first-round quarterfinal games. Their respective matchups are No. 8 Kentucky Wesleyan, No. 7 Lake Erie, No. 6 Ohio Dominican, and No. 5 Malone.
The regular season came to an end on Saturday with multiple teams battling for a spot in the postseason tournament based on the Point Rating System.
The top seed that emerges from the quarterfinals will then host the semifinals (Friday) and championship (Saturday). The winner of the Great Midwest Championship tournament will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship Midwest Regional.
By way of the Point Rating System, the Hillsdale Chargers earned the No. 1 seed. The Chargers (19-8, 15-3 G-MAC) are on a five-game winning streak heading into tournament play. Their road win on Saturday officially clinched a share of the regular season title with Findlay.
Hillsdale is set to host Kentucky Wesleyan (11-15, 9-9 G-MAC) in Dawn Tibbetts Potter Arena at 7 p.m. ET. The two teams split in the regular season, making Tuesday's matchup that much more intriguing.
Findlay and Lake Erie will face each other for the third time this season, with the Oilers (20-7, 15-3 G-MAC) winning both regular season matchups. Findlay’s eight-game winning streak came to an end against Hillsdale on Saturday.
The Storm (14-14, 8-10 G-MAC) are looking to regroup while coming off four consecutive losses heading into Tuesday’s 7:30 p.m. ET tip-off. LEC plays Findlay tough and personnel wise, match up very well with their counterpart despite the seeding disparity.
Walsh and Ohio Dominican will square off for the second time this season, as the Cavaliers took the first meeting in December. Walsh (22-6, 13-5 G-MAC) finished the regular season with two wins, halting a three-game losing streak.
The Panthers (12-16, 8-10 G-MAC) fell to Trevecca Nazarene in the regular season finale. Tuesday’s game will be held in Alumni Arena also at 7:30 pm ET.
The last quarterfinal game will feature Cedarville and Malone in the battle of the four and five seeds. Cedarville took both regular season meetings and will host the Pioneers at 7:45 p.m. ET in the Callan Athletic Center.
The Yellow Jackets (18-10, 13-5) closed regular season play with a win over Ohio Valley, while the Pioneers (16-12, 10-8 G-MAC) head into the tournament following a loss to Walsh in the Mayor's Cup rivalry.
Great Midwest coaches are in the process of voting for the all-conference team. 10 student-athletes will be featured on the first team and 10 on the second team. Five additional names will be recognized for the all-defensive team. The conference championship banquet is set for Thursday evening.
