Lake Erie’s Kynard Repeats for CoSIDA Academic All-District Honors

2.21.20

INDIANAPOLIS – Lake Erie senior guard Gabe Kynard (Toledo, Ohio/St. John’s HS) has earned the distinction of being named to the 2019-20 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Team.

Through the organization’s joint press release on Thursday, Kynard was recognized as one of the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom.

Kynard represents the Great Midwest Athletic Conference in District 4, comprised of additional representatives from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC).

Kynard is also a repeat CoSIDA Academic All-District Team selection after he reeled in D2CCA All-Region and Great Midwest All-Conference First Team accolades as a junior in 2018-19.

Kynard is a senior majoring in Accounting and has a GPA of 3.85. There were only six men’s basketball student-athletes named to each all-district team in Division II.

Four of the six honorees from District 4 were accounting majors.

Kynard and his teammates are focused on finishing the regular season strong to qualify for the Great Midwest Championship tournament. Lake Erie finishes the conference schedule with a road game at Malone and home date vs. Walsh.

Kynard has scored double-figure point totals in all 26 games for the Storm this year, coming through with a season-best 34 points for a big road win at Walsh in early December. He is currently ranked 11th among all Division II active career leading scorers with 1,826 points.

Kynard is the current scoring league leader with 20.3 points per game. He also averages 5.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists per contest. He converts over 86 percent of his chances at the free throw line, third in the league.

Kynard’s defense is also on display while averaging 1.7 steals, another total that is third best in the Great Midwest. Lake Erie head coach Kyle Conley utilizes his star guard for 34.7 minutes per game, second only to Kentucky Wesleyan’s Adam Goetz (35.2).

As a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-District Team selection, Kynard advances to the next stage of the voting in consideration for Academic All-American status.

The CoSIDA Academic All-America® program separately recognizes basketball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and the NAIA.

First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team (if applicable) Academic All-America® honorees will be announced between March 9-12.
