INDIANAPOLIS – The finish line to the regular season is in sight as Great Midwest Athletic Conference Basketball Players of the Week honors were announced on Monday afternoon by the league.
Teams are making their playoff push – whether to qualify for the postseason or earn the right to host a first-round quarterfinal game.
The entire Great Midwest Championship field will be finalized on the last day of the regular season as the point rating system totals are settled. Teams will be seeded appropriately based on their final finish through the point rating system calculations.
Men’s Basketball Player of the Week
Branden Maughmer
Cedarville
Guard
Sophomore
Chillicothe, OH (Chillicothe HS)
This is the second conference weekly honor for Maughmer as the Yellow Jackets won at home vs. Malone and on the road in overtime at Lake Erie.
Cedarville handed the Storm their first home loss of the season and did it by overcoming a 20-point second half deficit. The Yellow Jackets wouldn’t have made it past regulation if it weren’t for the late heroics of Maughmer, who drained a three at the buzzer that tied the score 85-85.
On the week, the sophomore guard averaged 22.5 points per game he shot an even 50 percent from the field.
He also had four assists, 2.5 steals and 2.5 rebounds, per-game averages as Cedarville improved to 16-8 overall, 11-3 in the league and is currently fourth in the point rating system.
Maughmer had a team high 26 points in 34 minutes vs. Lake Erie on Saturday. He was 9-of-16 on all field goal attempts and handed out seven assists.
Against another potential postseason-bound program in Malone, Maughmer paced his team in the scoring column again, this time with 19 points. He had four rebounds, a pair of assists and four steals.
The Yellow Jackets are balanced – producing five different players this year in double figure scoring led by Maughmer’s 15.2 points per game. He’s also accurate from deep by making 41 percent of his tries from three-point territory.
Women’s Basketball Player of the Week
Sydney Kin
Findlay
Forward/Center
Sophomore
Carey, OH (Carey HS)
Kin gathered her third conference player of the week award for the current season as the Oilers toppled Ohio Dominican and halted a hot run by Tiffin in their home confines of Croy Gymnasium.
The sophomore virtually had a 20/10 double-double average over the past two games she leads her team with 16.2 ppg and 8.8 rpg for the year.
Kin’s made 58 percent of her tries from the floor as UF picked up its 13th and 14th wins of the season.
Findlay is current fifth in the PRS totals, well within striking distance to host a first-round playoff game in the conference tournament.
Kin was a force to be reckoned with in the paint against ODU. She carved out 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting and pulled down 11 boards. Four of those were on the offensive glass.
In a close game against Tiffin, the Oilers were able to get a little bit of separation and outscored the Dragons in every quarter. Kin ended with 22 points again, this time to go with eight rebounds and a pair of blocks in 34 minutes.
