INDIANAPOLIS – A few more teams lifted the lid off of their spring debut as Great Midwest Athletic Conference Softball Players of the Week awards continued on Tuesday.
Player of the Week
Maddy Kalchik
Alderson Broaddus
Outfield/First Base
Senior
San Diego, CA (Scripps Ranch HS)
The Battlers had a busy week, playing six games vs. Elizabeth City State, Winston-Salem State and Mount Olive.
Kalchik hit .454 in her first action of the spring, delivering 10 hits in 22 at-bats as AB came away with three wins, beating those opponents by a combined score of 49-2.
The senior produced a grand slam home run, a double, seven runs scored and six RBI throughout the week. She also had one stolen base.
Kalchik cleared the bases with a grand slam in AB’s five inning rout vs. Elizabeth City State as the Battlers won 23-1. She played right field and left field defensively while batting in the middle of the lineup.
Pitcher of the Week
Dana Weidinger
Hillsdale
RHP
Senior
Bath, OH (Revere HS)
Hillsdale's season opener was pushed from Friday to Sunday, but in that season opener, the senior pitcher Weidinger was dialed in, tossing a five-hit shutout in a 4-0 win over McKendree.
Weidinger was at her best vs. regional competition in Sunday's season opener, walking just one batter while striking out seven in seven innings of work.
She allowed just five hits to the Bearcats and held them down long enough for the Chargers to score three big insurance runs in the sixth inning, earning their first win of the season.
Weidinger was paramount in Hillsdale’s 2019 conference championship tournament run, marking back-to-back trophies for the program.
She was in the circle for the title winning moment against Cedarville and is coming off a season with 64 strikeouts in 118.1 innings pitched.
