INDIANAPOLIS – Walsh and Cedarville will represent the Great Midwest Athletic Conference this weekend in North Canton, Ohio, as part of the NCAA Division II Showcase on ESPN3 for both men’s and women’s basketball contests.
The women’s game will tip at 1:05 p.m. ET from Alumni Arena and the men’s game will follow around 3:05 p.m. ET on Saturday, Jan. 11.
This is Cedarville’s second time on the NCAA Division II Showcase after facing Trevecca Nazarene in Nashville for a doubleheader back in 2016. Walsh will be making its first appearance on the national platform since joining the Great Midwest as a full member in 2017-18.
Walsh and Cedarville’s women occupy two of the top three positions in the updated point rating system. The defending conference tournament champion and preseason favorite Cavaliers (12-2 overall) are rolling at 5-0 in league play and the Yellow Jackets (11-3 overall) are 4-1 in a tie for third with Malone.
Walsh and Cedarville’s programs were both part of last year’s three-way tie for co-champions with Kentucky Wesleyan in the 2018-19 regular season standings.
The Cavaliers men (12-2 overall), also reigning conference tournament champs and preseason favorites, feature the conference’s top scoring offense and top scoring defense. Cedarville (8-6 overall) won four straight conference contests to open the Great Midwest schedule and paces the league in free throw percentage while ranking second in three point field goal percentage.
The men’s matchup also has plenty on the line and features two top-tier opponents that are bookends in the current point rating system implemented for the first time this year. Both Walsh and Cedarville are 4-1 in league play.
In late November, NCAA Division II announced 28 regular-season men’s and women’s basketball games that will be highlighted on ESPN3 or NCAA social media as part of an effort to promote the division on several platforms throughout the academic year.
An additional eight games as part of four flex doubleheaders will be finalized in February. The games are expected to highlight premier and pivotal matchups toward the end of the regular season.
Now in its second year, the division’s media agreement features two distribution models for basketball and football. For basketball, 18 games will stream exclusively on ESPN3, available on espn.com and the ESPN App.
Eighteen additional games are part of the hybrid model, and they have the flexibility to be distributed on TV and online. The division will work with the TV partners of participating conferences and schools on the opportunity to air games on TV. These games also will be distributed online through NCAA social media accounts — specifically, Division II Facebook (facebook.com/ncaadivisionii) and Twitter (@NCAADII) — and could be distributed through conference and school digital networks.
“The basketball season is off to an exciting start,” said Terri Steeb Gronau, vice president of Division II. “We’re looking forward to another great Division II Basketball Showcase that highlights our student-athletes’ achievements on and off the court. Before we know it, we’ll be celebrating the women’s Elite Eight in Birmingham and the men’s national championship game in Atlanta as part of combined championships with Divisions I and III.”
The current showcase schedule, which spans November through February, features 14 of the 23 basketball-sponsoring conferences in Division II and was created from a pool of conference nominations.
The basketball showcase began on Nov. 24 with a doubleheader between East Stroudsburg and Indiana (Pennsylvania) in the hybrid model.
