INDIANAPOLIS
– With league play for the new calendar year starting Thursday, January 2, the Great Midwest Athletic Conference has introduced a point rating system (PRS) to determine the top eight men’s and women’s teams that will qualify for the 2020 Great Midwest Basketball Championship tournaments.

At the request of its basketball head coaches, the Great Midwest has implemented the new postseason qualifying procedure for the 2019-20 campaign.

The Great Midwest Point Rating System is designed to provide a team more points for a win on the road or at home against top competition based on conference winning percentage, while distributing fewer points for a win against weaker competition. Points are also distributed for losses, with more points awarded for a loss against stronger competition versus if the team lost at home or on the road to a struggling team.

The eight teams with the highest ratings from the formula at the end of the regular season will qualify for the postseason tournament.

In last year’s men’s and women’s basketball standings, the top eight teams advanced to the postseason based on conference winning percentage.

The Great Midwest website will continue to display all 13 (women) / 12 (men) teams on the standings page and provide a link to updated PRS ratings following each conference game.  The PRS document will show the top eight teams highlighted to indicate the tournament field should the season end at that time.

It is important to remember that PRS ratings will fluctuate more early in the league schedule, and will become more predictable when the number of conference games played increases.

The 2020 Great Midwest Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championship tournaments will be conducted at the top PRS site remaining in the tournament bracket following the opening quarterfinal round. The top four PRS seeds would serve as host sites for the first round.

Included below is the Great Midwest Point Rating System, followed by the amended tiebreak criteria from Great Midwest sport operating codes section 3.3.
