WBCA Coaches Poll (Jan. 14)
INDIANAPOLIS – In front of a national audience, Walsh extended its win streak to nine straight as the new Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II Coaches Poll was released on Tuesday afternoon.
The Cavaliers moved up two spots since making their debut last week at No. 25. Walsh carries a 14-2 overall record and is the lone unbeaten in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference schedule.
Now ranked 23rd under head coach Kate Bruce, the Cavaliers find themselves in an ideal spot at the top of the conference point rating system.
Walsh went on the road to beat Ursuline and edged out Cedarville in an exciting finish to part one of the DII Showcase game on ESPN3. The Cavaliers haven’t lost since November and that was a single-digit margin of defeat against now No. 3 Ashland.
Walsh remains the highest scoring team in the league (85.3 ppg) and sophomore Quionche Carter is the new scoring leader in the conference at 18.6 ppg.
Carter’s clutch free throws with less than two seconds on the clock helped Walsh beat Cedarville late in regulation. Former conference freshman of the year Mayci Sales continued her torrid stretch that included a 26 point, 10 rebound game against Ursuline.
Sales has been a two-time conference player of the week this season.
Looking ahead to the current week of competition, the Cavaliers will go on the road this week to face Alderson Broaddus and Ohio Valley.
