INDIANAPOLIS – Walsh and Cedarville collected Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Players of the Week accolades as the league schedule officially kicked off over the weekend.
This year, the standings will be calculated via win percentage instead of conference points, as teams try to qualify for the conference tournament.
Walsh, Cedarville and Trevecca Nazarene, all grabbed wins in their Great Midwest openers while 110 minutes couldn’t break a deadlock between Findlay/Tiffin and Lake Erie/Ursuline in a very competitive opening week.
Offensive Player of the Week
Olivia Peters
Walsh
Forward
Senior
Glenview, IL (Glenbrook South HS)
Peters, a familiar name in the all-conference list since Walsh joined the league, has earned top offensive honors after she had a hand to two of the Cavaliers’ three goals this past week.
Peters came through in the clutch over the weekend when she scored the game winning goal in overtime to beat conference opponent and rival Malone.
The lone goal came in the 96th minute and helped Walsh get over the hump after having 11 shots on target for the game. Peters had nine shots overall and five on target Saturday.
Two days earlier, Walsh hosted No. 11 Ferris State in what proved to be a very even non-conference matchup. WU had already defeated Saginaw Valley State in a rematch of last year’s NCAA Championship opening-round tilt.
The Cavaliers fell just short vs. FSU as the teams tied each other on shots with 16. Peters assisted the Walsh goal and unleashed five shots against the Bulldogs’ defense, two of those being on target.
Peters and the Cavaliers have a few days off before they travel to conference opponent Alderson Broaddus on Thursday for their lone match of the week.
Defensive Player of the Week
Allison Garlock
Cedarville
Goalkeeper
Senior
Lebanon, OH (Lebanon HS)
Garlock was dominant in between the sticks for the Yellow Jackets this past week, earning her place for a nod as the top defender in the league.
Cedarville only had one contest, but it was a vital one as the Yellow Jackets opened the league schedule against a tough opponent in Ohio Dominican.
The senior keeper saved six shots during an eventual overtime victory that eventually saw Aleah Martone successfully convert a game ending penalty kick.
Garlock has produced 26 saves this season through only five games, an average of over five stops per game. The Yellow Jackets haven’t had an easy schedule either as they started out the season against 6th ranked Lee and they have also played No. 21 Bellarmine.
The Yellow Jackets may be 2-3-0 on the year but with Garlock in between the sticks, Cedarville is in a good position continuing league play. Cedarville is currently on a two-game win streak and will look to continue that as they go on a road trip to Trevecca Nazarene and Kentucky Wesleyan later this week.
This is Garlock’s third career defensive weekly honor and she has also been a national player of the week throughout her time at Cedarville.
