United Soccer Coaches Poll - Week 2
INDIANAPOLIS – An undefeated start to the year became too hard for the United Soccer Coaches organization to overlook as Lake Erie represented the Great Midwest Athletic Conference in the new national poll.
The Storm went from the pool of unranked teams all the way up to No. 16 after beginning the year with five straight wins.
Lake Erie was viewed as a conference championship contender after being selected fourth in the preseason coaches poll, but the team’s early success has put other teams around the league on notice.
Coached by Louie Rolko, the Storm have blanked four of their first five opponents going into extended conference play. LEC already scored a big road win at Malone to begin the league schedule on Sept. 10.
The next four games for the Storm are in Painesville after Lake Erie went on the road and beat Super Region 3 opponents Davenport and Northern Michigan in a three-day span.
Javier Borreguero’s season-opening game winner in 2OT vs. Ashland was a dramatic moment for the team against Ashland and set the tone early on. LEC also pitched a shutout vs. Slippery Rock.
Storm goalkeeper Tom John was tabbed as the league’s defensive player of the week to open up the sport’s the fall awards.
Dropping out of the Week 2 Poll was Ohio Valley. The Fighting Scots were ranked seventh a week ago and went into the preseason viewed as a top 15 program after winning the Midwest Region in 2018.
