INDIANAPOLIS – Walsh senior women’s soccer student-athlete Corynne Swift was officially declared as the 2018-19 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Tuesday morning.
Swift was chosen by administrators around the conference for the annual award as the Loveland, Ohio, product thrived in her four-year career as a midfielder for the Cavaliers in head coach Dave Renard’s system.
“I have loved every minute I played and studied at Walsh,” Swift said in a statement. “I would like to thank my teammates and coaches for all the opportunities and support the past 4 years. I would like to give a special thanks to my fellow seniors, especially my guardian angel 19.”
“First and foremost, I’m just extremely proud of Corynne,” said Renard. “She’s a great example of how dedication and hard work pays off in the classroom, on the pitch, and in life. We’re extremely excited to have her for a few more years, as she will be continuing her studies and coming on staff as a graduate assistant soccer coach.”
Swift was a first team all-conference selection by the league’s coaches in the fall and also earned a defensive player of the week award in early October.
The talented mid started all possible 21 games for the Cavaliers in a memorable 2018 run that included a 15-5-1 overall record. Walsh also reeled off an 11-2-1 league mark and would finish runner-up in the conference tournament.
Swift and her teammates were rewarded with an at-large selection to the NCAA Championship Midwest Regional and scored a first-round playoff victory over Saginaw Valley State.
Swift manned the pitch for a team-leading 1,851 minutes and finished with one goal and three assists in her final year. She was also named to the United Soccer Coaches DII Scholar Regional Team (All-North/Central) and the United Soccer Coaches All-American Third Team.
Swift also made the United Soccer Coaches All-Midwest Region Third Team with two of her teammates.
The senior graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA this spring as a double major in Psychology (Community/Clinical) and Psychology (Pre-Occupational Therapy) with a minor in Biology.
She was a member of the honors program and served as a member of the Walsh Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. As part of the honors program, she conducted an independent research project concerning sensory processing disorder and ADHD while participating in various community service efforts.
Swift has a career goal of becoming an occupational therapist.
Swift is the first female from Walsh to receive the league’s scholar-athlete of the year honor. She is the third women’s soccer student-athlete in the award’s history to receive this award, joining Ohio Dominican’s Alli Pavlik (2017-18) and Ursuline’s Vanessa Consiglio (2014-15).
