INDIANAPOLIS – League champion Hillsdale swept the final selection of Great Midwest Athletic Conference Softball Players of the Week honors as the Chargers successfully defended their title run.
Hillsdale went 4-0 at a combination of Firestone Stadium/Walsh University as the No. 8 seed to complete a remarkable run through the conference tournament bracket.
The Chargers are getting ready to face Grand Valley State in the NCAA Midwest Regional as the No. 8 seed in the bracket.
Player of the Week
Victoria Addis
Hillsdale
Outfield
Junior
Massillon, OH (Jackson HS)
Addis started the conference tournament with one home run on the season, but goes into the NCAA Championship with three after an unexpected power surge helped carry the Hillsdale offense.
Addis batted .500 (7-for-14) while recording five RBI and scoring four runs to account for a high percentage of offense in relatively low-scoring affairs.
In extra innings, Addis’ pop resulted in the first homer driven out of Firestone Stadium in the championship bracket.
It turned out to be a game winner for the Chargers in the top of the seventh inning as HC handed No. 5 Kentucky Wesleyan its first defeat in the winner’s bracket.
Even more notable, Addis, a lefty, hit her long ball off a left-handed pitcher.
In another winner’s bracket game, Addis put Hillsdale on the board with a two-run blast in her first at-bat, a crucial piece of the puzzle as the Chargers won by a final score of 7-6.
In the championship game, she went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Pitcher of the Week
Camryn Olson
Hillsdale
RHP
Freshman
Mason, OH (Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy)
Olson was on the hook for a pair of winning decisions and a save in high-leverage situations to help Hillsdale win the conference title for the second consecutive season.
As a freshman, the righty demonstrated poise while pitching three consecutive games after strong starts in the circle from Dana Weidinger.
Olson, Weidinger, Julia Sayles and primary position player Natalie Walters, all made significant contributions to the Chargers’ championship drive.
Olson recorded the final two outs in the championship game as Cedarville was threatening with runners at the corners and one away in a save situation.
Against No. 3 seed Tiffin, Olson finished the final 2.2 innings and was the pitcher of record as the Chargers poured it on with four runs in the top of the sixth inning. She also tossed 2.2 scoreless frames in the extra-innings win over No. 5 KWC.
