UF’s Torres First WGCA All-American in Great Midwest History

5.23.19

INDIANAPOLIS – It has been a historical ride for Findlay senior Makenzie Torres as she was named a Women's Golf Coaches Association All-American earlier this week to pen the final chapter of her decorated career.

The Great Midwest Athletic Conference was fortunate enough to have her in the league for two years of her career and she was named player of the year as both a junior and senior.

Torres is the first women's golf student-athlete in conference history to make the WGCA All-American Team and the Oiler landed second-team accolades for her 2018-19 season accomplishments.

Torres led the Oilers to a tie for fifth at the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championship, their highest finish in program history.

Torres finished tenth at the event with a 54-hole score of 227 (77, 74, 76) and helped propel the Oilers into match play where she won her battle with Florida Tech's Lauren Watson by five strokes. Watson went on to lead Tech to the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championship by winning her semifinal and final match.

An all-East Region selection for the third straight year, Torres was named the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year in each of the past two seasons.

She also won two conference championships during her tenure with the program, winning the 2017 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) title and the 2018 Great Midwest championship. She finished as the runner-up in the Great Midwest Championships in 2019.

Torres broke the Great Midwest single-season scoring record per 18 holes two different times in her career and helped the Oilers shatter the team single-season scoring conference record for back-to-back years.

Torres was a key part of the Oilers winning Great Midwest team titles in the first two years as a conference member institution.
