PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Two-time Great Midwest Athletic Conference champion Findlay had an impressive showing in the Sunshine State as a qualifier for the NCAA Division II Championships.
The Oilers, coming off the East Super Region title in Owensboro, finished in the top half of the field in stroke play among the nation’s best converging at PGA National on May 14-18.
Florida Tech captured the overall team title followed by Cal State San Marcos and then defending national champ UIndy. Barry and Southwest Oklahoma State tied for fourth in the standings to round out the top five.
This was the first season a team from the Great Midwest had advanced to the final championship stage out of the super regionals.
Findlay’s two-time Great Midwest Player of the Year Makenzie Torres concluded her collegiate career on a high note with another top-10 finish to her career achievements. Torres finished in solo 10th with a three-round total of 227 (77-74-76).
Torres finished her season with a league-leading scoring average of 75.17 through 30 rounds scored. She had seven rounds of even par or better and led all players with eight top-10 performances.
Torres also broke her own conference single-season scoring record by a razor-thin margin after posting an average of 75.39 during her junior season in 2017-18.
As a team, Findlay shattered its own conference team single-round scoring record for a season with a counted four-player average of 302.80 in 12 different events.
Kristina Kniesly was in the top 25 with a tie for 22nd. She finished the three-round event with her best round, carding a 1-over par 74 on the par-73, 6081-yard layout.
Samantha Hatter finished tied for 45th with a three-round score of 241. Conference championship medalist Meredith Wipper had her best round in the second round with a 78 and ended up tied for 62nd.
Freshman Jill Schmitmeyer finished out her impressive first year on the collegiate scene tied for 79th as a key contributor for Findlay’s national tournament run.
In championship medal play, it was Florida Tech defeating Findlay by a score of 3-2 and by virtue of the Oilers’ quarterfinal finish, the program would end up tying for fifth overall in the tournament.
