HILLSDALE, Mich. – It was a clean sweep for Tiffin’s program following a title at the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships over the weekend at Hillsdale College.
A total of 12 different conference championship meet records were shattered by this year’s participants as teams look to make a final push to qualify for the NCAA Championships in Kingsville, Texas.
The Dragons accumulated 216.33 points in the scoring counting 21 events to officially secure both indoor and outdoor championships in their first year with the conference.
It was another dominant display in all facets from the Dragons, outpacing runner-up Walsh as the Cavaliers registered 126 points. Malone was third and Findlay came in fourth while host Hillsdale placed fifth with 89.33 points.
Individual award winners for the meet were also announced as Davis & Elkins’ Emeric Arnaud claimed Great Midwest Track Athlete of the Meet and Freshman of the Year honors. Tiffin’s Cameron Burrows was presented with the hardware for Field Athlete of the Meet.
Among Tiffin’s conference meet record breakers included junior sprinter Jonte Baker in the 100-meter dash, senior Lamar Hargrove in the 200-meter dash, the 4x100-meter relay grouping of Elijah Gauldin, Zion Cross, Wan’ya Williams and Wavell Hinds, Burrows in the high jump and Quincy Scott in the long jump.
Hargrove and Burrows both set overall Great Midwest outdoor records in their respective events as well.
Findlay dominated the throws cage as expected with Eldred Henry easily establishing a new conference meet record in the shot put and senior Austin Combs doing the same feat in the hammer throw.
The Oilers had their third league meet record reset with freshman Xavier Marable dashing his way to a 47.68 in the 400-meter finals. He broke former UF standout George Effah’s mark from a year ago.
Distance records crumbled courtesy of Malone’s George McCartney in the 10K and Davis & Elkins’ Emeric Arnaud in the 5K. Arnaud clocked a 14:41.45 to bookend his overall conference record and provisional time of 14:22.38 recorded two weeks ago at the Duke Invitational.
McCartney made the top-10 list in the 10K and his meet-record time complements his overall record set back in late March at the Raleigh Relays.
Walsh senior Jacob Kernell broke the 3K steeplechase record, impressive considering a national champion (Daniel Michalski – Cedarville) still holds five of the league’s top-10 times. Kernell finished in 8:52.87 to greatly enhance his chances of making nationals.
Cavaliers’ teammate Lane Knoch also made the conference top-10 list with a winning time in the 400-meter hurdles. He has cemented his place twice among the league’s best this spring in the company with former Malone star and Indianapolis Colts undrafted free agent WR Ashton Dulin.
The pole vault was cleared by 5.30m and won by Cedarville sophomore Tommy Ansiel, who has battled Hillsdale’s Jared Schipper during an entertaining outdoor season duel in the event. Both Ansiel and Schipper are locks as auto qualifiers and contenders to be national champs.
