INDIANAPOLIS – The final selection of Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week honors for the 2018-19 season was announced on Monday.

The final award went to tournament champion Walsh, which qualified for the NCAA Championship Midwest Regional bracket along with Kentucky Wesleyan.

Walsh and Kentucky Wesleyan are headed to Springfield, Mo., for their first-round contests on Friday against Lewis and Drury, both opponents from the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week

Walsh
Guard / Forward
Freshman
Southfield, MI (Wylie E. Groves HS)

Carter was an integral part of the Walsh success as the Cavaliers went 3-0 in the conference tournament to celebrate with a title win on Saturday.

The freshman was a first team all-conference pick by the coaches and her athleticism was on display all week in her first taste of the playoffs.

The rookie guard was unfazed by any of the pressure as she averaged 21 points and six rebounds per game while shooting over 55 percent from the field.

With each time the Cavaliers advanced in the bracket, Carter stepped up her game to a different. In the quarterfinals, she produced a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds to get past No. 8 Trevecca Nazarene.

In the semifinals, she carved out 22 points and five rebounds while handing out three assists to defeat defending conference tourney champ and No. 5 seed Hillsdale.

She saved her best for last on Saturday vs. No. 2 Kentucky Wesleyan with a game-high 26 points on near-perfect 12-for-15 shooting. She also collected three steals in the championship final.

Carter was second in the conference in scoring at 16.9 ppg and second in the league in field goal percentage (.524).

Carter was named conference athlete of the week three different times in her first season at the collegiate level.
