Women’s Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week (Feb. 12)

2.12.19

INDIANAPOLIS – More provisional marks were met and league records went down as Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women’s Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week awards were announced on Tuesday morning.

Findlay will host the Great Midwest Championships this year starting on Friday, February 22, with the women’s pentathlon and men’s heptathlon, to lead things off.

Women’s Track Athlete of the Week
Carsyn Koch-Johnson
Cedarville
Middle Distance
Graduate Student
Washburn, ME (Washburn District HS)

Koch-Johnson is arguably one of the most accomplished student-athletes, regardless of sport, in Great Midwest history. Her cross country and track and field exploits have been well documented, both at the conference, regional and national levels.

After missing 2017-18 and the cross country 2018 campaign due to injury, she is back on the track following her rehabilitation process.

The Yellow Jackets competed at the GVSU Big Meet in Allendale, Mich., as Koch-Johnson ran her trademark 800-meter distance and was part of the 4x400-meter relay.

She clocked a 2:08.93 in the 800, the fourth-best time in Great Midwest history, behind only herself during the 2016 and 2017 NCAA Championships and the Joe Banks Invitational in 2017 during her junior season.

In the 4x4 relay, she was part of the second-fastest time in conference history along with Olivia Hoffman (last week’s track athlete of the week), Sarah Hoffman and Lynsey Smith.

Women’s Field Athlete of the Week
Madeline Hayes
Tiffin
Pole Vault
Freshman
Delaware, OH (Hayes HS)

Hayes registered the top height cleared in the conference this year with a provisional mark of 3.83m (12’ 6.75”) at the Dragon Grand Prix.

She also put a dent into the conference record books as the only pole vaulter not named Kaitlyn Barber (Walsh NCAA qualifier) to climb into the list of top 10 heights in conference history.

As a freshman, Hayes has emerged as a contender for a conference title and officially has the No. 7 height in the Great Midwest indoor records.
