Ohio Valley’s Season Ends in Super Region 3 Semifinal, Round of 16

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A terrific run for No. 5 seed Ohio Valley came to a conclusion in the round of 16 of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship Super Region 3 semifinals on Friday vs. No. 9 UIndy, 3-2.
 
The Fighting Scots were an at-large selection into the men’s soccer tournament bracket after falling in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championship tournament semifinals.
 
But OVU was also the last team standing out of four Great Midwest NCAA qualifiers as No. 1 Lake Erie, No. 6 Tiffin and No. 7 Cedarville all were eliminated in the second round.
 
Ohio Valley’s second round win vs. No. 4 McKendree ensured the program its third consecutive Sweet 16 appearance in a regional format.
 
The Fighting Scots put up a great fight against the Greyhounds, who would go on to win the Super Region 3 title on Sunday with a win vs. No. 3 Maryville, 1-0. UIndy had eliminated Lake Erie in the second round.
 
During the battle with the Greyhounds, the Fighting Scots fired 14 shots on the day seeing eight
of them on target. The Greyhounds had 12 shots and also eight on were on goal
 
UIndy scored the first goal of the game, but right before halftime, Christian Gutierrez tied the match at 1-1 with an assist from Benjamin Grelet-Constantini.
 
The Greyhounds took the lead back early in the second half, and just 10 minutes later, David
Bercedo scored to tie the game at two apiece with the assist again coming from Grelet-Cons.
 
UIndy scored the game winning goal at the 87-minute mark as the Ohio Valley ran out of time to try and tie the game for the third time in regulation.
 
Ohio Valley finished the season with a 14-5-2 record and were led by all-conference forward Juan Hoyos with 19 points and nine assists. The Fighting Scots outscored their opponents by a total of 15 goals while also just allowing over one goal per game.
