LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Trailing 3-1 early in a shootout, prospects appeared bleak for No. 7 seed Cedarville against No. 10 Wisconsin-Parkside in the NCAA Championship Men’s Soccer Super Region 3 matchup.
But the Yellow Jackets did not quit, dug in deep and thanks to multiple stops by goalkeeper Carter Selvius, were determined that this game would not be an untimely end to their 2019 season.
Cedarville tied the recently crowned Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion Rangers through a scoreless double overtime to set up PK’s.
The Yellow Jackets ultimately prevailed, 5-4, in the shootout as each team went deep into their arsenal of shooters with eight different players trotting out for both sides in pressure-packed situations.
The first sudden death, must-make situation was answered by Josiah Fragnito to keep Cedarville alive after UWP made three of its first four attempts.
Selvius responded with three saves in his next four shots faced as Nick Marculo and Alex Narog were successful in their tries.
In the end, it was all-conference midfielder Pedro Alvares who dealt the final blow after a Rangers miss that Selvius read like a book diving to his right.
Alvares kept the ball low and pushed it into the left corner past UWP keeper Juan Gonzalez to ultimately Cedarville to advance.
Cedarville was a Great Midwest Championship tournament finalist, downing Findlay and Ohio Valley, on its way to the title match.
Cedarville is one of four Great Midwest Athletic Conference programs in the NCAA Championship Super Region 3 bracket. The Yellow Jackets will now face region host and Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament champion / No. 2 seed Bellarmine on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. ET.
