INDIANAPOLIS – As many as three teams could stake claim to the title of co-champions as an intriguing Week 11 slate is lined up in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference football schedule to end the regular season.
Bragging rights could go towards a combination of the following: Tiffin outright or Tiffin and Findlay, or Tiffin and Findlay and Ohio Dominican – if each school would end up with one league loss in the standings.
Also keeping things crowded at the top is the possibility for a three-way tie for second place.
The team at the top of the tiebreaking order that is not selected for the NCAA Championship during the selection show on Sunday will represent the conference in the America’s Crossroad’s Bowl.
No. 21 nationally-ranked Tiffin (8-1, 6-0) and Findlay (7-1, 5-3) have a monumental matchup on Saturday in Donnell Stadium and both programs are steamrolling forward with momentum. The atmosphere will be absolutely electric with so much on the line.
In Week 10, Findlay’s thrashing against Ashland sets up the Oilers well at home, while the Dragons blitzed defending league champion Hillsdale (6-4, 4-2) and ended the Chargers’ hopes of repeating.
Something has to give as the top two scoring offenses in the conference clash and two of the top three scoring defenses in the league try to hold their ground.
A Tiffin win would crown the league’s fourth different champion in as many seasons and would almost certainly cement a spot in the NCAA Championship field in Super Region 1 with earned access (no AQ).
The Dragons are currently eighth and a win to end the regular season could help Tiffin’s chance to move up even further. But Findlay could play spoiler and really throw a wrench into things with a victory in front of the home crowd.
No. 10 in the NCAA Super Region is Ohio Dominican and the Panthers (6
-1, 5-2) will have a road test at Hillsdale to try to be in the line of dominoes that could fall. ODU put up big offensive numbers against Lake Erie last weekend.
Hillsdale DB Drake Temple became the third player this year in the league to record 3 interceptions in a single game joining Findlay’s Christopher Jefferson and Ohio Dominican’s Alessio Amato.
The G-MAC Founders’ Cup Game Trophy has been in the hands of Alderson Broaddus (1-8, 1-5) for three consecutive seasons. The Battlers can make it four straight rivalry wins on Saturday as they head to Owensboro to face Kentucky Wesleyan (0-10, 0-6), one of the league’s charter members in the sport.
The Battlers earned their first victory of the season in Week 10 against Walsh as Nicolas Bishop battered his way for three touchdowns on the ground and 100 yards rushing.
Walsh (2-8, 2-5) and Lake Erie (3-7, 2-5) both step out of the conference schedule on Saturday. The Cavaliers head to Missouri Baptist and Lake Erie goes to No. 16 UIndy, a program ranked fifth in Super Region 3.
The annual all-conference team voted by the coaches will also be scheduled for release next Friday afternoon as individual award winners from the season and different positional groups are recognized for their efforts in the 2019 season.
