Volleyball Players of the Week (Oct. 7)

INDIANAPOLIS – A pair of programs without a league loss collected Great Midwest Athletic Conference Volleyball Players of the Week as announced on Monday afternoon.
 
Four teams currently are perfect through the league schedule at this point in the season. Cedarville and Tiffin are both at 4-0 and No. 18 ranked Hillsdale with Walsh both sit at 3-0.
 
Both Findlay and Kentucky Wesleyan are 2-1 while four more teams have one more conference win under their belt.

In a rematch of the last two championship finals, the nationally ranked Chargers prevailed on the road against the Oilers in straight sets.
 
UF still stands to pose one of the biggest threats to Hillsdale’s aspirations for a third consecutive conference championship run, but the Chargers have had the upper hand in the head-to-head series.
 
Mertz directed traffic efficiently from her setter position, posting numbers that exceeded her already league-leading assist totals. Her teammates hit to a combined .254, including a .353 clip in the second set.
 
The junior all-conference and all-region performer posted 39 assists in three sets, an average of 13 per set.
 
Mertz is once again tops in the Great Midwest in assists per set, averaging 10.96 through 51 sets so far.
 
Defensive Player of the Week
Olivia Kearns

Lexington, OH (Lexington HS)
 
Kearns had 23 digs in one match alone as the Cavaliers forged a pair of wins on the road vs. Kentucky Wesleyan and Trevecca Nazarene in the conference schedule.
 
The RS freshman posted impressive defensive totals to complement her passing numbers, which currently rank second in the league (10.52 assists per set).
 
Versus TNU, Kearns had 38 assists to go with 11 digs and a block. She also recorded three kills.
 
Against KWC, another four-set victory for the Cavaliers, Kearns produced 21 digs and 49 assists. She also had four blocks and another block as Walsh improved to 9-4 overall.
 
The Cavaliers will take a four-match win streak into the new week of competition.
