Tiffin Tops Wrestling Preseason Poll

INDIANAPOLIS – Tiffin emerged as the clear frontrunner in preparation for the 2019-20 season as the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Wrestling Preseason Coaches Poll presented by Under Armour was released on Friday.
 
The Dragons locked down first place in this year’s poll with five first-place votes among the league’s coaches and 25 points.
 
Defending conference champion Lake Erie was picked as the preseason runner-up with 20 points. In third, with the other first-place vote by the coaches, was Findlay and the Oilers had 18 points in the balloting.
 
Alderson Broaddus, Kentucky Wesleyan and Ohio Valley, rounded out the six-team preseason poll as the sport gets ready to launch its second season in the Great Midwest.
 
The 2018-19 inaugural campaign was a resounding success as the first Great Midwest Championship Duals tournament was housed on Tiffin’s campus.
 
The pin at the heavyweight class by Evan Loughlin of Lake Erie is forever rooted as one of the most memorable moments to help decide a conference championship as the Storm beat Tiffin head-to-head.
 
In the extended postseason, seven different qualifiers from the conference went on compete at the NCAA Championships. Four of those student-athletes celebrated NCAA All-American honors and Tiffin’s Nick Mason stunned many to capture the 197-pound national title.
 
Mason also won the NCAA Super Region 3 title as both Tiffin and Lake Erie made regular appearances in the NWCA Coaches Poll.
 
In addition, Lake Erie’s Nick Boggs was recognized by the league as the Great Midwest Male Collegiate Achievement Award winner in the spring banquet, the highest honor bestowed by the conference for a senior student-athlete.
