INDIANAPOLIS – With the first set of Super Region 1 rankings due out on Monday, teams around the Great Midwest Athletic Conference will be attempting to enhance their selection status in Week 8.
Tiffin (6-1, 4-0) gave the conference a restored presence in the AFCA Coaches Poll, receiving votes while enjoying a current five-game win streak under head coach Cris Reisert. TU boasts both the conference’s best scoring offense and top scoring defense.
League rushing leader JaQuan Hardy is bearing down on a 1,000-yard season after the Dragons gashed Week 7 foe Alderson Broaddus for almost 400 yards as a team on the ground. TU will have a tough test on Saturday against Lake Erie (3-4, 2-2) as the Storm’s resurgent 2019 season continued with the program’s third win.
Storm QB Javarian Smith was brilliant, orchestrating a 42-point outburst with one of the top 10 best marks in league history in total offense and passing yardage.
Findlay (5-2, 4-1) has a chance to make a statement in Super Region 1 action against undefeated No. 6 ranked Notre Dame (OH), arguably one of the league’s biggest games ever. Findlay stunned No. 2 ranked Shepherd in the 2017 NCAA Championship first round and could really enhance its playoff resume with an upset in South Euclid, Ohio.
The Oilers are contending for the Great Midwest championship trophy and two-time conference player of the week QB Matt Winzeler will look to guide a confident offense on the road.
The feeling around the Findlay camp is brimming with optimism and after falling to No. 2 Ferris State just by one point in the season opener,
DB Christopher Jefferson added another interception to his gaudy NCAA-leading season total in Week 7, bringing him to 8 on the year. Close behind in a tie for third nationally is Ohio Dominican LB Alessio Amato, previously a D2Football.com National Player of the Week pick.
Ohio Dominican (4-2, 3-1) tussles against Walsh (1-6, 1-3) as the Cavaliers showed resolve in almost pulling out an OT win vs. West Liberty. Walsh scored a season-high 38 points while the Panthers stymied Kentucky Wesleyan to keep the other Panthers still seeking their first win of the season.
RB EJ Colson averaged almost nine yards per carry against KWC and found the end zone three times. Kentucky Wesleyan (0-7, 0-4) will try to reverse its fortunes against defending league champ Hillsdale (4-3, 2-1) after the Chargers dropped to Findlay last weekend.
Alderson Broaddus is idle with the bye week on Saturday.
