INDIANAPOLIS – Playoff spots are on the line as new Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Players of the Week honors were announced on Tuesday morning.
Undefeated Findlay became the first to earn a postseason bid into the conference tournament; the Oilers have been pounding on the door to break into the United Soccer Coaches national rankings – with a 9-0-1 record, UF should be considered for top 15 or even top 10 mention by this point.
Walsh remains second in the standings after suffering its first league loss vs. Kentucky Wesleyan. The Panthers clawed their way to two wins and are tied with Trevecca Nazarene in the playoff race.
Ohio Dominican and Cedarville are both tied for third as they each beat common opponents over the previous week, Lake Erie and Ursuline, on the road.
Malone’s high-scoring offense hit a speed bump with the road trip to TNU and KWC, coming up empty in a pair of shutouts. The Pioneers are still in good position in the top half of the standings.
Offensive Player of the Week
Madisyn Hunt
Kentucky Wesleyan
Forward
Junior
Jasper, IN (Jasper HS)
Each NCAA statistical leader at the end of the season regardless of division receives a commemorative plaque. If Hunt continues her torrid pace, the junior could collect multiple pieces of hardware to celebrate the current year.
Hunt erupted for a 10-point week with four goals and a pair of assists as Kentucky Wesleyan earned a pair of victories against preseason league favorite Walsh and Malone.
In addition to leading the Great Midwest in all of these categories, Hunt is now the national Division II leader in points per game (3.70) and goals per game (1.60) while tied for the lead in goals (16) and points (37).
The Panthers have on four straight and established themselves as a playoff team. Keeping KWC in the hunt has been the forward, who scored twice in the second half to give her team a 4-0 lead against the Cavaliers.
She also had assists on the first two goals of game put home by Kamryn Pulliam. Hunt also scored the final two goals of regulation vs. Malone as she went up against reigning offensive player of the week Danielle Lung from the Pioneers.
Hunt scored in the 20th minute and the 65th minute to help KWC improved to 4-5 in league play this season.
Defensive Player of the Week
Cecilia Kuntz
Ohio Dominican
Goalkeeper
Freshman
Berlin, Germany (Dathe HS)
As a freshman, the future just keeps getting bright for the Panthers as Kuntz hauled in her third defensive weekly honor of the season.
And as symbolic as it may be of a team honor, Kuntz came through with some huge statistical numbers to back it up.
Ohio Dominican went on the road for a pair of conference victories in shutout form at Ursuline on Thursday and Lake Erie on Saturday.
Kuntz made a career-best 13 stops against Ursuline and recorded a pair of saves vs. Lake Erie to give her 15 for the week. She played all 180 minutes between the posts for a pair of clean sheets.
The Panthers defense has pitched six total shutouts this season, including five in the last six games played.
Ohio Dominican improved to 8-4-0 overall and will remain home for the rest of the regular season. Due up this week are matchups against Walsh and Malone.
