INDIANAPOLIS – The league schedule is a little more than halfway complete as Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week honors were announced on Monday morning.
No. 18 Findlay and Hillsdale have both emerged as first-place shareholders in the conference standings at 10-2.
Cedarville’s impressive season and homestand continued with four straight wins in the Callan Athletic Center with Walsh and Ohio Dominican tied for fourth at 8-4.
The Yellow Jackets are flourishing and improved to 9-3 in the standings, quite a turnaround after the missing the playoffs a year ago at 8-12 in league play.
The race to be one of the top eight to make the Great Midwest Championship will continue to intensify as perennial postseason qualifiers like Alderson Broaddus and Kentucky Wesleyan would be on the bubble if the season ended today.
Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week
Conner TenHove
Cedarville
Forward
Sophomore
Valparaiso, IN (Valparaiso HS)
As the third different Cedarville student-athlete (Grant Zawadzki, Brenden Maughmer) to receive athlete of the week recognition, TenHove has been a catalyst for the Yellow Jackets’ surge towards the top of the conference standings.
The sweet-shooting sophomore averaged 19.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and a pair of steals per game as the Yellow Jackets beat defending conference tourney champ Ohio Dominican and Ohio Valley.
At 6-7, 200, TenHove presents a major matchup problem for opponents. He shared the team lead in scoring against ODU with Maughmer (14 points) while pacing his squad with 25 on Ohio Valley.
TenHove had a streak of consecutive made free throws end at 38 over the past week, nearly breaking the school record of 45. He has missed just two shots at the charity stripe all season and is shooting over 96 percent (49-of-51).
With a few more attempts at the line, TenHove would be the NCAA DII national staistics leader in free throw percentage. The current leader with 2.5 made per game is Mars Hill’s Ja’Shawn Brooks (93.3).
TenHove has two 30+ games of scoring this year, including a season-high 32 vs. Malone and 31 against Truman State.
His stat line has seen a noticeable uptick since conference play began with a team-leading average of 18.2 ppg. He currently ranks seventh in the league in scoring and is a big reason why the Yellow Jackets are the team conference leader in three-point field goal percentage (.413).
TenHove is shooting almost 54 percent from the field (close to 50 percent from long range) and is pulling down over 7 rebounds in league play.
