INDIANAPOLIS – Hillsdale staked claim to Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week recognition with a signature win on the road as announced late Monday afternoon.
The Chargers stunned No. 12 Findlay in Croy by double digits to pull into a tie for first in the new conference standings.
Now at 8-2 in league play, Hillsdale and Findlay look to take aim at the regular-season conference title and hosting this year’s Great Midwest Championship tournament.
Winter weather pushed Lake Erie/Walsh to play on Monday. Ohio Dominican and Cedarville both won a pair of conference contests to remain tied for third in the standings.
Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week
Davis Larson
Hillsdale
Forward
Sophomore
Sheboygan, WI (North HS)
Hillsdale put on a shooting clinic in arguably one of the toughest environments in Division II to upend Findlay, 93-82. Not only was it a rare loss for the Oilers on their home floor, but for Hillsdale, it snapped a 21-game winless streak on the road at UF dating back to 2002.
The Chargers, now winners of four straight, improved to 12-5 on the season as they shot over 53 percent from the field (over 64 percent from three).
Larson was behind the offensive onslaught, scoring a team-high 24 points in 34 minutes on the floor. The sophomore was 7-of-12 on field goals and added seven rebounds, three blocks, two assists and two steals.
He made all seven of his free throw tries and was perfect from long range with three made baskets.
It was the lone game of the week for Hillsdale, but head coach John Tharp and his program made it count midway through the regular season.
Larson is averaging over a dozen points per game while serving as the team’s second-leading scorer and has led the Chargers in scoring six different games this season.
He has played and started in all possible 17 games so far and is shooting an impressive 52.4 percent on all shots from the field.
