INDIANAPOLIS – Walsh and Tiffin were both representatives for the first wave of Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Players of the Week awards announced on Monday afternoon.
Six teams came away with unblemished records in the first week of competition, including four team teams with 2-0 starts (Lake Erie, No. 7, Ohio Valley, Tiffin, Walsh). Davis & Elkins is 1-0-0 and Trevecca went 1-0-1 in its first two contests of the fall.
The conference slate gets underway on Tuesday with four matchups and five more league games will be played on Thursday.
Offensive Player of the Week
Myles Cornwall
Walsh
Forward
Junior
Ottawa, Ontario (Sir Robert Borden)
The Cavaliers actually boasted the top two point scorers from the first week of competition, with Cornwall headlining the group and Dwight Van Dyke close in second.
Cornwall reeled off three goals and had two assists while receiving credit for both game-winning scores against Daemen and Roberts Wesleyan.
The junior playmaker factored into all four of the Cavaliers goals against Daemen in the season opener. He recorded Walsh’s first two goals of the season – with just over a minute elapsed between each strike – early in the first half.
Cornwall also fed Van Dyke on both goals for assists in the shutout effort.
Both players scored against Roberts Wesleyan as well and Cornwall’s third goal of the season came in the 14th minute of regulation. In a 3-1 final, it resulted in his second game winner in as many contests.
Defensive Player of the Week
Dylan Morris
Tiffin
Goalkeeper
Freshman
Avon, OH (Avon HS)
Morris made a bit of Great Midwest history for the Dragons as the first conference weekly selection (along with football’s Nick Watson) since becoming a member institution.
And a special week it was for the rookie netminder with a pair of clean sheets to start his collegiate career against Slippery Rock and Illinois Springfield.
Tiffin, picked third in the conference preseason coaches poll, showcased their defensive prowess as both opponents combined for just 21 total shots.
Morris made a save in each half of the season opener against Slippery Rock as the Dragons lone goal was pushed across the line just before the first half expired.
He made one stop against Slippery Rock as Tiffin was the eventual winner in overtime.
