USTFCCCA National/Regional Rankings (Week 2)
INDIANAPOLIS – A handful of Great Midwest Athletic Conference schools were represented in the United States Track and Field Cross Country Association (USTFCCA) national poll released earlier this week.
The men’s top-25 poll featured Walsh at No. 18 and Malone at No. 22. The women’s top-25 poll included Hillsdale at No. 10 and Walsh at No. 12.
All three schools were idle during the past week of competition but are gearing up for some of the top tier events in Division II, including the All-Ohio Championships hosted by Akron and the Greater Louisville Classic in Kentucky.
Walsh has three of the men’s top-10 8K times this season, including Mark Hadley’s top 25:23.20 at the National Catholic Invitational. Junior Jacob Caniford is sixth and sophomore Noah Murray is 10th while the Cavaliers’ top finisher at regionals, senior Jacob Kernell, is not far behind either.
The cumulative 2:10:32.00 clocked by the Walsh men’s team is also tops around the league this fall and helped the program finish fourth overall and first among all non-DI schools at the National Catholic Invitational.
Malone is tuning up for the postseason with a four mile race and an 8K under its belt so far. The Pioneers have been led by senior George McCartney, who finished first in the Kutztown Challenge and has been athlete of the week.
Hillsdale’s women have staked claim to the top three 6K times in the Great Midwest this year headlined by sophomore Maryssa Depies and her 22:11.30 at the Spartan Invitational.
Junior Arena Lewis and sophomore Christina Sawyer rank second and third, while five more Chargers are still slotted in the top 15 (Allysen Eads, Megan Poole, Lauren Peterson, Claire McNally, Kate Vanderstelt).
Walsh has the top two women’s times in the 5K led by a 2018 athlete of the week junior Andra Lehotay and senior Brianna Coy.
Walsh will be the host institution for the Great Midwest Cross Country Championships to be conducted at GlenOak High School in Canton, Ohio, on Saturday, November 3.
