INDIANAPOLIS – The second round of offensive and defensive honors for Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Players of the Week were announced on Monday afternoon.
With seven points in the league standings, Findlay is currently on top with a 2-0-1 conference record. Ohio Dominican and Trevecca each have a 2-0-0 league mark.
Five different teams have six points in the conference standings. Cedarville, Ursuline and Walsh, each have a 2-1 record for their point total.
Most teams have played three conference contests in the season to date with the exception of defending conference champ Ohio Valley. The Fighting Scots have played one as they prepare for Davis & Elkins and Alderson Broaddus in the upcoming week.
Some of the most deadly point scorers are emerging early in the season with the top five (and ties) featuring Samantha Buck (Ohio Dominican), Makena Schlosser (Trevecca), Olivia Peters and Brianna Sanborn (Walsh) and Becca Gordon (Ohio Dominican) and Shannon Marsh (Findlay).
Offensive Player of the Week
Shannon Marsh
Findlay
Midfielder
Sophomore
St. Claire Shores, MI (St. Claire Shores/Bowling Green State)
Joining the current first-place Oilers from Division I Bowling Green State, Marsh has established herself as one of the league’s top playmakers early in the season.
Marsh has recorded six points in the season to date, tied for fifth in the league.
The sophomore led all players during the past week with five points, including two goals and one assist as the Oilers beat Ursuline at home and went on the road to blank Lake Erie.
Marsh scored in each contest and was credited with an assist on a Karleigh Clare goal early in regulation against Ursuline.
Marsh is helping Findlay thrive under first-year head coach James Walker and the Oilers are taking their momentum on the road for tests at Kentucky Wesleyan and Trevecca this week.
Defensive Player of the Week
Marissa Wierzbicki
Ohio Dominican
Goalkeeper
Senior
Powell, OH (Bishop Waterson)
Wierzbicki and the Panthers’ defense was simply impenetrable and helped the Ohio Dominican soccer program complete a men’s/women’s conference defensive weekly sweep with the pick of Alec Mathew.
At 3-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the Great Midwest, the Panthers are looking to wrap up unfinished business after advancing into the conference championship title match last year.
ODU’s NCAA Championship opening-round win was certainly a high point, but the program remains on a quest to get back, this time with a conference tournament trophy in hand.
Wierzbicki, a first-team all-conference keeper in 2017, is a big part of the defensive equation as she had a total of 10 saves in a pair of shutout efforts against Walsh and Malone.
The Panthers have another set of conference games coming up as they look to continue their shutout with Ursuline and Lake Erie due up next.
