KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fifteen student-athletes from the Great Midwest Athletic Conference were officially selected to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court for the 2017-18 academic year.
Cedarville, Findlay, Ohio Dominican and Ohio Valley, were represented in the list of academic achievement award winners from across the country in all NCAA divisions and the NAIA.
In order to be named to the NABC Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria, including junior or senior academic eligibility, a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2017-18 academic year, matriculated at least one year at their current institution and be a member of NCAA Division I, II III or NAIA Division I or II with a NABC member head coach.
Ohio Dominican, the reigning Great Midwest conference tournament champion and NCAA Championship qualifier, led the way with five selections. The Panthers were coached by Dan Evans in a memorable 2017-18 campaign as key contributions came from Honors Court members Ben Casanova, Adam Cytlak, Mike DeLeon, Ryan Hoyng and Alexander Stevens.
Findlay, coached by Charlie Ernst, advanced into the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Championship bracket and the Oilers celebrated four selections to the Honors Court. Upperclassmen Aaron Overhiser, Elijah Kahlig, Drew Garverick and Corbin Linder, were recognized for their academic success.
Cedarville and Ohio Valley each had three student-athletes recognized. The Yellow Jackets were coached by Pat Estepp as first team all-conference guard Patrick Bain earned the award along with junior forward Gabriel Portillo and senior guard Evan Kraatz.
OVU, coached by Mike Snell, placed the senior duo of Victor Demetrio and Aleksandar Djordjevic on the Honors Court along with junior guard Kevin Kengne getting a nod.
All 15 selections landed on the Great Midwest Academic All-Conference Team for the previous academic year as well.
