INDIANAPOLIS – Findlay football student-athlete Andrew Alten (Loveland, OH/Loveland HS) was officially named the 2017-18 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Tuesday.

The year-end awards process for select individuals from the conference includes the Male/Female Collegiate Achievement Award (leadership/community service/athletics/academics), Male/Female Athlete of the Year (athletics) and Male/Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year (athletics/academics).

Voting is conducted among the league’s administrators from all 13 member institutions in the most current academic year.

Alten received a handful of national, regional and conference honors, as a stalwart anchor for the offensive line in the fall. The 6-2 lineman was voted Great Midwest Offensive Lineman of the Year by the coaches and carved out a place on the all-conference first team.

He earned NCAA All-American honors by a handful of publications including the AFCA (first team), D2CCA (second team), D2Football.com (second team) and Associated Press (second team). All-region honors came by way of the D2CCA (first team) and Don Hansen (first team).

In the nine games in which Alten played, Oilers were fourth in the nation in rushing yards per game (292.3), third in scoring (47.7), second in first downs (248). He suffered an injury during a memorable postseason run in which Findlay went to the NCAA Championship and beat Shepherd in the opening round.

Alten graduated from Findlay with a strong 3.91 cumulative GPA and his degree in Computer Science to earn a place on the 2017-18 Great Midwest Academic All-Conference Team.
