Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week (May 1)

5.8.18

INDIANAPOLIS - The final Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Track & Field Athletes of the Week before the championship meet gets underway on Thursday at Hillsdale College.

The Great Midwest Outdoor Championships will be conducted at Ken Herrick Stadium.

Men’s Track Athlete of the Week
Mark Hadley
Walsh
Junior
Boardman, OH (Boardman HS)

Hadley set the 5,000-meter conference record this week on his way to earning track athlete of the week. He is peaking at the right time as he competed in just his third meet of the season at the Hillsdale Gina Relays.

It may have been the only event Hadley ran, but he made it count. That conference record was one that he set just two weeks prior at the Bison Classic and his time of 14:30.22 he ran at Hillsdale beat that time by almost four seconds.

The junior also ran well enough to earn a provisional qualifying time in the event. His time ranks 38th among Division II runners in the event and now owns three of the top four times in conference history.

Hadley is coming off an indoor campaign that had him win the 5,000-meter indoor run with a time of 14:53.65 as well as second in the conference in the 3,000 meter run.

Men’s Field Athlete of the Week
Daniel Capek
Hillsdale
Senior
Pardubice, Czech Republic (Northwood)

Capek also is coming off a strong week where he provisionally qualified in two different events at the Hillsdale Gina Relays as well.

In the event he didn’t qualify in, the shot put, he still put up a performance that is in the top ten of Great Midwest performers this season. He set a season best with a distance of 14.48 meters. This was good enough for ninth in the G-MAC this season.

He also provisionally qualified and won the event in both the discus and the hammer throw. His distance of 50.42 in the discus ranks second in the Great Midwest this season and 32nd in all of Division II in the event.

He also won the hammer throw with a distance of 59.15 meters that is second in the conference and also the 16th best hammer throw in Division II.

He is also coming off a strong indoor season where he placed sixth in the shot put and fourth in the weight throw at the Great Midwest Indoor Championships.
