HILLSDALE, Mich
. – After 13 meet records were broken during the indoor event, 15 more standards were shattered at the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Outdoor Track and & Field Championship over the weekend.
 
Stepping to the top of the podium crowned as the new men’s team champion was Walsh as the Cavaliers racked up 170.5 points in the scoring. Indoor men’s team champ Findlay was runner-up with 128 points.
 
Hillsdale College served as host once again for the outdoor meet at Ken Herrick Stadium after holding the indoor conference meet in the Margot V. Biermann Athletic Center. The Chargers were third in the team scoring with 109 points and Malone placed fourth with 105.
 
The Walsh men, coached by Rob Mizicko, impressed as they won a total of five different events including the 200-meter dash, 5K, 10K, discus and hammer throw.
 
The 200-meter dash was captured by senior Hunter Williams while the Cavaliers went 1, 2, 3, at the podium for the 5K with Mark Hadley, Jacob Caniford and Jacob Kernell. Kernell also finished second in the 3K steeplechase while throwing standout Marcus Myers dominated the throws cage with discus and hammer titles.
 
Steven Kapes also won the 10K distance with a new championship record of 31:26.27. The distance performances come as no surprise after Walsh cruised to the Great Midwest Men’s Cross Country Championship team title back in the fall.
 
Myers was designated the Great Midwest Field Athlete of the Meet. As a two-time conference field athlete of the week and USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week in the spring, Myers will head to the NCAA Championships in Charlotte, N.C., as the favorite in the hammer throw.
 
Myers’ No. 1 hammer distance in the nation was recorded at the Ashland Alumni Open and he has almost nine feet of margin between second place on the list, Central Missouri’s Jace Kalekiau.
 
The Great Midwest Track Athlete of the Meet was Malone junior star Ashton Dulin, who finished first in the 100-meter dash and 110-meter hurdles. He also was runner-up in the long jump and took home third anchoring the Pioneers 4x1 relay unit. Dulin set a new conference championship meet record in the 110-meter hurdles at 14.23 seconds, second all time.
 
First-year rising jumps standout Martin Etsey of Findlay was named the Great Midwest Freshman of the Meet. He set a conference meet record in the triple jump and registered the third-best distance all-time in the long jump while winning the event.
 
Ohio Dominican had a several notable efforts in the record books, including a new overall 800-meter record set by senior speedster Justin Carroll. Carroll also anchored a conference record-breaking time for the 4x400-meter relay as the Panthers finished first.
 
ODU set conference records in both the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays.
 
Cedarville freshman Tommy Ansiel broke the all-time record in the pole vault with a clearance of 5.12 meters (16’ 9.5”). He currently ranks 12th in Division II among all competitors and broke the previous best top height held by former Cedarville NCAA qualifier James Blackwell.
 
Findlay’s 2018 Great Midwest Indoor Field Athlete of the Meet Trey Everett won the decathlon with 6,980 points and set a new meet record in both the high jump and long jump. Everett cleared 2.09 meters for the all-time record in the high jump. The Oilers also had another conference meet record with junior Dequan Lovell now owning the top four marks in Great Midwest history in shot put; Indoor NCAA All-American George Effah also eclipsed the 400-meter run conference meet record.
