INDIANAPOLIS
– After Walsh University was crowned the team champion, the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Outdoor Track & Field All-Conference Team was announced with nationals on the horizon.

Placewinners at the conference meet were honored with first, second or third-team honors, based on their finish by event at the Great Midwest Championships hosted by Hillsdale.

Individual award winners with their body of work for the entire outdoor season considered were also determined in a vote by the coaches.

Great Midwest Track Athlete of the Year, Great Midwest Field Athlete of the Year, Great Midwest Freshman of the Year and Great Midwest Coach of the Year for 2018, were finalized.

A total of 11 different student-athletes will also go on to represent their institution and the Great Midwest at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Charlotte, N.C.

Malone’s junior two-sport blur Ashton Dulin was named the Great Midwest Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year after qualifying for nationals in both the 110 / 400-meter hurdles. He finished first in the 100-meter dash and the 110-meter hurdles at the conference meet.

Dulin also finished runner-up in the long jump and anchored the third-place Pioneers’ unit in the 4x100-meter relay race.

Dulin is coming off an All-American performance during the indoor season in the 60-meter hurdles. He owns the all-time outdoor conference records in the 110-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles and is fourth all-time in the high jump while contributing to the third-fastest 4x100 relay time.

Going to nationals as the incumbent favorite and No. 1 seed in the hammer throw is Walsh senior Marcus Myers, named the Great Midwest Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year. Myers is entered in both the hammer and discus throws after qualifying for indoor nationals in the weight throw.

He owns the top three outdoor all-time marks in the hammer throw, including the conference championship meet record, and also holds a top-10 distance in discus. The discus is notable because of former national champion Duke Taylor (Malone – 2017) also competing.

Earning Great Midwest Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year was Walsh leader Rob Mizicko after his Cavaliers were crowned the team champion with 170.5 points. Mizicko will be joining two men’s national qualifiers in Charlotte, Myers and 3K steeplechase qualifier Jacob Kernell, who is ranked 13th in the nation following his latest attempt.

Cedarville first-year student-athlete Tommy Ansiel excelled in the pole vault to earn distinction as the Great Midwest Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Freshman of the Year. Ansiel shattered his own previous best and the championship meet record by clearing 5.12m. He now owns six of the league’s best 10 efforts in pole vault, passing former NCAA qualifier, also from Cedarville, James Blackwell, along the way.

Also qualifying for nationals on the men’s side was Hillsdale’s Joseph Humes (1,500m) and Daniel Capek (hammer throw), Findlay’s Trey Everett (decathlon) and Martin Etsey (triple jump), Malone’s Tevin Riddle (triple jump), Cedarville’s Trent Classen (3K steeplechase) and Ohio Dominican’s Justin Carroll (800m).
