INDIANAPOLIS – Cedarville and Walsh claimed a part of the second set of Great Midwest Athletic Conference Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week honors as announced on Tuesday.
More outdoor records fell during the last weekend of competition as teams went to the Emory Invitational in Georgia, Vanderbilt Black & Gold in Tennessee, Cal U Early Bird in Pennsylvania and the Charleston Relays & Alumni Invitational in West Virginia.
Previous to the most recent weekend of competition, the 400m dash (Daniel Jarrell – Davis & Elkins) and the high jump (Adam Bouchard – Kentucky Wesleyan) had broken outdoor spring records.
Both the shot put (James Miller – Walsh) and hammer throw records were broken over the weekend.
Men’s Track Athlete of the Week
Ethan Gatchell
Cedarville
Junior
Middle Distance
Red Lion, PA (Homeschool)
Gatchell put a dent in a traditionally strong event around the conference during the outdoor season with the second-best time clocked in the 800-meter run.
With the rest of his teammates at the Emory Invitational, Gatchell impressed as he was only 0.32 of a second away from the all-time record set in 2016 by Tim De Jong, also of Cedarville.
Gatchell crossed the line in 1:52.94. A Yellow Jacket has at least a share of all top-10 800m times in conference history (also includes Daniel Michalski, Wyatt Hartman).
Men’s Field Athlete of the Week
Marcus Myers
Walsh
Senior
Throws
Grelton, OH (Patrick Henry HS)
Myers was a national qualifier for the indoor season as the Great Midwest features tremendous depth in the men’s throwing events.
He’s off to a great start for the outdoor season and recorded another provisional mark at the Amy Adams Memorial while breaking the conference record in the hammer throw.
Teammate James Miller also broke the conference record in the shot put; Myers now ranks third nationally among all qualifiers at this point in the outdoor season. He tossed a distance of 60.16m (197’4”).
This is Myers’ second weekly conference honor of 2017-18 following field athlete of the week status during the indoor season.
