INDIANAPOLIS – Trevecca and Ohio Dominican both enjoyed perfect non-conference stretches to collect Great Midwest Athletic Conference Softball Players of the Week honors on Monday afternoon.
Trevecca won four games against Black Hills State after the Music City Invitational was washed out due to weather conditions.
Ohio Dominican recorded a pair of impressive Midwest Region wins against Rockhurst and UIndy.
Only five Great Midwest teams have officially started the spring season as Alderson Broaddus played four contests and Findlay was able to get two games in back on Feb. 3.
Lingering weather conditions continue to force tweaks into team’s schedules as they get ready for conference play.
Player of the Week
Bailey Alexander
Trevecca
Third Base
Junior
Glasgow, KY (Glasgow HS)
Alexander made a bid for the single-game conference records with a 7-RBI effort against Black Hills State, one shy of tying the record of eight done twice by former Salem All-American Katie Chryssofos.
In four games, she was 7-of-13 at the plate with 11 RBI and eight runs scored. Alexander homered twice and drew a pair of walks as the Trojans outscored Black Hills State, 48-10.
Three of the contests were shortened to five innings as the bats came alive for TNU, which improved to 5-3 overall.
Alexander had an inning to remember with two home runs, including a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth frame of game one. She trotted around the bases with the grand slam, her first of the year, with no outs in the inning.
As TNU batted around against Black Hills State, Alexander unloaded on another pitch for a three-run blast that scored Morgan Powell and Dallas Richards. It capped an 11-run frame after MaKray Odom led off the game with a solo shot.
Three days later, Alexander went 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and four runs scored in game one of another twinbill vs. the Yellow Jackets.
She has matched her home run total from a year ago already and after suffering a season-ending injury that cut her promising 2016 short, is looking to recapture the form that made her a first team all-conference pick as a rookie.
Pitcher of the Week
Taylor Farmer
Ohio Dominican
Right-Handed Pitcher
Sophomore
Mt. Blanchard, OH (Riverdale HS)
Farmer was untouchable in five innings of relief as Ohio Dominican nipped UIndy in extras with a nine-inning victory.
She came in with the Panthers trailing 5-0 and was next in line after starter Abby Lamping went four innings with five strikeouts.
The Ohio Dominican offense came to life with a five-run sixth inning and gave Farmer some run support as the sophomore continued to keep the Greyhounds’ bats quiet.
She also had a total of three hits between the two games, including going 2-for-5 with an RBI against UIndy batting cleanup in the order.
Farmer logged a total of five scoreless innings, scattered four hits, walked one and fanned four for her first winning decision. She ultimately helped her own cause at the plate with a game-winning RBI single to score previous conference player of the week Taylor Kline.
