Week 6 Notes
Great Midwest Records
INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Midwest Athletic Conference football schedule has reached the midway point through the 2018 season as the championship race intensifies leading into Week 6 on Saturday.
A handful of single-game conference records were destroyed in Week 5 as respective offenses across the league lit up scoreboards.
Starting with Ohio Dominican (4-1, 2-1 G-MAC), it’s hard to comprehend to believe how easy redshirt freshman quarterback Evan Ernst is making things with just two career starts under his belt. Ernst threw for a conference record seven touchdowns against Alderson Broaddus (1-4, 0-2 G-MAC) and was one of two QB’s to put up 400 yards of total offense.
Ernst spread the ball around to his talented targets, one of which includes senior star Cory Contini, who had five receiving touchdowns for another new league record and almost 200 yards. His 30 points by a position player also tied Hillsdale’s David Graham for the most in a game.
Another wideout, ODU’s David Turner, broke the single-game record for receptions with 15 and on defense, two-time conference defensive player of the week Ross Thompson had the longest interception return with a 73-yard gain.
Another QB shining bright in Week 5 was Hillsdale’s Chance Stewart, whose total offensive yardage total is the second most in a game in league history.
Stewart helped the Chargers move past Malone in a shootout with four passing TD’s. Having already beaten Ohio Dominican, Hillsdale (4-1, 3-0 G-MAC) turns its focus to Findlay (3-2, 2-1 G-MAC) in Week 6, an intriguing matchup that should feature a lot of points between both teams.
The Oilers are gathering some midseason momentum after handling Lake Erie. Special teams was a huge factor against the Storm and reigning special teams player of the week Maliq Carr was one of two players to have two blocks on either a punt/field goal/PAT try in the same game.
Placekicker Grant Loveridge also capitalized on all 10 PAT’s following UF’s 70-point showcase, also a new league best. UF is still the top scoring offense in the league and is rolling up almost 500 yards per game.
Lake Erie (0-5, 0-3 G-MAC) heads to the road to face Alderson Broaddus after the Battlers had their upset bid against ODU spoiled last week. AB held a three-point lead at halftime but couldn’t slow down a second-half surge by the Panthers.
Both teams will be looking for their first league victory of the season.
Tiffin (5-0, 2-0 G-MAC) is still rolling after knocking off Wayne State and the Dragons take their unblemished 5-0 record against Malone. Pioneers QB Deandre Clayton used his arm and legs to keep his team in it against Hillsdale and will need to face the second-ranked defensive unit from Tiffin, a group that is only giving up 20 points and under 350 yards per game.
Walsh (1-3, 1-1 G-MAC) slowed down Kentucky Wesleyan (2-3, 1-2 G-MAC) after the Panthers won back-to-back games and will host Ohio Dominican in Week 6. Specialist Kasey Tingler is finally getting the chance to show off his strong leg, drilling three field goals to tie the single-game record last week.
Kentucky Wesleyan will be idle in Week 6.
