INDIANAPOLIS – Three different Great Midwest Athletic Conference institutions appear in the first NCAA Midwest Regional Rankings for women’s soccer. The highest spot went to Ohio Valley, who came in at No. 7. Walsh and Trevecca came in just behind them at No. 9 and 10 respectively.
The NCAA Midwest Regional rankings selects the top teams from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) and the Great Midwest (G-MAC).
Each conference is guaranteed an at-large selection while an additional five at-large selections are made between the three leagues.
At No. 7, the Ohio Valley Fighting Scots currently lead the Great Midwest standings with a record of 10-2-3 overall and 9-1-1 in conference play. A big part of their strong season has been strong offensive output from sophomores Paula Valbuena and Fernanda Araya, paired with great defensive play lead by senior goalkeeper Kimberly Mora.
At No. 9, the Walsh Cavaliers sit at 9-3-1 on the year and 8-2-1 in G-MAC play. Led by coach Dave Renard, Walsh has gotten strong team play out of conference assists leader junior Olivia Peters and great defensive play lead by junior goalkeeper Mickey McClanahan, who leads the league in shutouts with seven on the year.
The Trevecca Trojans round out the rankings in the 10th position. Trevecca sits at 9-3-2 on the year and 8-1-2 in the conference schedule. Strong defensive play has been key to the Trojan’s campaign this year, with freshman goalkeeper Delayna Holman and senior Claire Brothen earning Great Midwest player of the week honors this season.
All three teams have also clinched spots in the Great Midwest Women’s Soccer Championship, with quarterfinal action beginning on Saturday, October 27th.
G-MAC action gets back up for all three squads on October 18 with Ohio Valley at Findlay, Trevecca hosting Cedarville, and Walsh hosting Lake Erie.
