Women’s Soccer Players of the Week (Oct. 22)

10.22.18

INDIANAPOLIS – Playoff dreams are about for realized for some and put on hold for others as Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Players of the Week décor was handed out Monday afternoon.

Seven of the eight conference tournament seeds have been decided and a head-to-head matchup between Ursuline and Malone in the regular-season finale will determine the final playoff qualifier.

Though things can change, it appears Ohio Valley is in the driver’s seat to host the conference tournament for the second year in a row. Trevecca and Walsh have made things really uncomfortable for the Fighting Scots at the top and each program is on a four-game win streak.

Davis & Elkins was the most recent team to make the postseason and the Senators clinched following their win against Alderson Broaddus.

LEC and UC each have 13 points in the standings and an identical 4-8-1 league record going into tomorrow night’s contest.

Offensive Player of the Week
Brianna Sanborn
Walsh
Midfielder
Junior
Twinsburg, OH (Twinsburg HS)

Sanborn brought the (hat) trick and treated her fans/teammates, all while throwing a scare into the opposition with four goals over the past week that resulted in a pair of Cavaliers victories.

Sanborn went on a scoring flurry in the second half against Ursuline, recording the coveted hat trick in less than 27 minutes. Her first goal was in the 52nd minute. Less than four minutes later, she put Walsh up 3-0 with her second of the game.

With time winding down, Sanborn delivered her third score of the contest in the 88th minute as the Cavaliers won 4-1.

She also contributed to the 7-0 shutout blitz against Lake Erie as seven different players put one through the net.

Sanborn’s fourth goal of the week was midway through the first half and at the time, gave Walsh a comfortable 3-0 cushion.

This is her second career conference offensive weekly honor. She is currently tied for second in the league with 27 points and is tied for the league lead with two other players with 11.

Defensive Player of the Week
Leah Hoffman
Trevecca
Defender
Junior
Chattanooga, TN (Chattanooga Christian HS)

The Trojans have a current streak of six shutouts and the defense has simply been an impenetrable brick wall while getting ready for the postseason grind.

The latest body of work for TNU was impressive at home blanking against postseason bound Cedarville and Ohio Dominican, both by 1-0 finals. It represented TNU’s second win against ODU, a championship finalist from a year ago.

Hoffman has been a big reason why the team is flourishing and five of the six shutouts have all been with 1-0 scores.

The Trojans allowed just eight shots from Cedarville’s offense and stifled Ohio Dominican with 13.

Trevecca is currently second place in the conference standings with the regular-season finale tomorrow night against Kentucky Wesleyan.
